What to eat in Hong Kong

Don't miss out on my Michelin Star Street Food Find on this blog!

Why is it my first time in Hong Kong with my adult money? Here's my quick history:

2008 - went as a broke college student and a pilgrim of the World Youth Day at the time

Few years later - went as a working young professional with my family but did not really know where to spend money

2024 -  went as an adult with more than 10 years of corporate work experience, fully equipped with a pocket WiFi and a husband who’s a very good navigator and a very good photographer. This is, by far, my best Hong Kong trip in terms of exploration and state of mind.

No flop in all of the food discoveries we had! Thanks to the universe for aligning the stars and guiding us to the right places to spend our Hong Kong Dollars. I give credits also to the happy hormones brought by traveling - I strongly believe that this made every food we tried more delicious!

Make your Hong Kong trip worth every penny. Use my Klook promo code BOJDOCTOR to redeem discounts.

Here’s a quick rundown of of what I think you should try in Hong Kong:

Me and my Chilled Mango Cream at The Shang Palace Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong

Mango Sago or Chilled Mango Cream

It’s the all-time famous Hong Kong dessert. For this, we went to the Shang Palace at Kowloon Shangri-La Hong Kong. Needless to say, this 5-star hotel’s restaurant breathes elegant and welcoming ambiance and the food is simply amazing. Their Mango Cream comes with Pomelo and Sago pearls. It’s so smooth and creamy, I think I felt it in my soul.

Apart from the food being excellent, we received a short but very sweet and warm kind of customer service at the #ShangPalace which I believe deserves a separate blog post. I highly recommend it!

Make your Chilled Mango Cream experience extra by staying at either Kowloon or Island Shangri-La which you may book via Klook. Redeem my code BOJDOCTOR on Klook to get extra savings.

What’s always a good idea? Coffee!

You might think that it’s easy to find a great tasting coffee with all the many options you can find in Hong Kong. That could be true but Pause It cafe’s vibe is giving the chill and intimate room feel with strangers who only have one goal - to enjoy a great cup of coffee.

I’d take the seats facing the street and watch people pass by. Visit Pause It's Instagram page here. People watching is a seemingly mundane and often overlooked activity that is so therapeutic according to Executive Recruit’s article. Read more on this link.

We hired #SweetEscape to take our photos and our photographer did not disappoint. Their service is available in various countries. I'm happy to share my special discount with you! Click on this link to claim $ 10 USD off of your first booking.

Michelin Star Pan-fried Buns

Hong Kong definitely has so much to offer but don’t miss out on this one. The Sheng Jian Bao or Shanghaianese pan-fried buns that we found were actually in the Michelin street food guide! It’s a must, so go and try!

Go to Cheung Hing Kee, they have a few branches:

  • Western District: G/F135 Belcher’s Street Kennedy Town

  • Central: G/F 48 Lyndhurst Terrace, Soho

  • Tsim Sha Tsui: Shop 6A, G/F, 48 Lock Road

  • Wan Chai: G/F 76 Thomson Road

  • Happy Valley: G/F Sing Woo Building, 8A-10 Sing Woo Road

We went to the Lyndhurst Terrace branch. Finding this one felt like we hit the jackpot. They have a very limited and intimate dining area.

I enjoyed every bit of their Signature pan-fried bun! Experience an explosion of Hong Kong flavors in every bite. I’d have it on my worst day and know that I’ll feel so much better after. The restaurant even has a guide on how to properly eat and enjoy their pan-fried buns. I strongly suggest you take a video of your very first bite! Read more of their menu here

Rang in the new year with a Transformers Burger

For our first meal for 2024, we had  burgers from no less than the very first Transformers-themed restaurant in the world, Transformers The Ark in Causeway Bay Hong Kong.

Hong Kong food that I brought home? Egg Rolls

You can find Egg Rolls almost everywhere in Hong Kong but if you’re in a tight budget but still want to take home a piece of Hong Kong to your hometown, go to the local supermarket “Wellcome” and get a box or more.

According to Chef Katie Chin, Chinese New Year Egg Rolls or Spring Rolls symbolize good fortune as they resemble gold bars.

I haven’t tried any during the time that I was in Hong Kong but the photos of egg rolls that I’ve seen were all very inviting so I knew I had to take home some.

When the happy travel hormones slowly fade away, it's nice to have something to taste that will remind you of that happy place. Go get those egg rolls.

Bonus if the egg roll packaging you get is a tin can like mine. You'll have a new home for your sewing kit in a few days.

I later on learned that you can also buy them on Shopee or Lazada. Here are my finds!

The travel tip you did not ask for

Make the most of your #OctopusCard by asking the restaurants if they accept it for payment transactions.

What is an #OctopusCard and do you need it when traveling to Hong Kong?

According to HK's official website:

"Octopus card is a contactless stored value card that provides customers a simple, safe and secure way to pay. First launched in 1997 across public transport systems, the applications of the Octopus card (and other physical Octopus devices such as watches, key rings, ornaments, etc.) have since continued to grow."

And yes you need it! Important note: Octopus Card cannot be shared, you should purchase one per person.

I hope your upcoming trip will be filled with nothing but great memories and delicious no-flop food discoveries!

I'd love to know if you have tried any of the foods I've tried too!

Leave comments below and I'd be glad to go through them.
